How to cut energy bills

Energy efficient home auditing or renovation planning

Picture
Home too cold, too hot or too expensive to heat or cool?

We guarantee we will save money on your home energy bills and improve your comfort. We do this by assessing the current efficiency of the house and any changes that could improve performance.

We assess energy costs and also comfort in hot weather and cold weather. The recommended changes can save thousands, but more importantly improve comfort and create a healthier home.

We will work with you to develop a long-term plan to renovate/retrofit your house to avoid wasting money. If you can only do inexpensive things now, it is important you do the most effective actions now, to save money immediately. And don't worry, if you intend doing a major renovation, that is an ideal time to upgrade that part of the house.

It is all too common for people to spend money on an energy saving approach and then realise that an alternative approach would have had a shorter payback period.

The biggest problem with this is that having spent the money, you have now reduced the potential saving (by the amount the first approach saved) and you are then unlikely to implement the better option as it is no longer cost effective.

(I have done that on our own home – I wish I had my current experience and knowledge 40 years ago when we moved in and started renovating our house!)

But if you use our services, you get that knowledge and experience built into our advice.

There are several approaches that we use to help people save money by reducing their electricity bills
.

Basic Home Energy Audit

  •  A site visit and discussion identifying your long-term goals and understanding the building's construction and condition.
  •  We would then prepare a long-term plan based on your objectives.
  • Video or phone meeting to discuss the draft report to ensure it meets your needs.
  • Prepare and present the final report.
This would cost $245*. (time on site approximately 2.0 hrs)

Enhanced Residential Efficiency Scorecard

  • A site visit and discussion identifying your long-term goals and understanding the building's construction and condition.
  • Conduct a Residential Scorecard Assessment, entering the data immediately to get a star rating out of 10.
  • If relevant we would take thermal images of faults in insulation etc.
  • We would then discuss the report with you and provide immediate recommendations.
  • Back in the office we would confirm star ratings and other data, and email you the final report.
  • We would also prepare a customised supplementary report addressing the specific issues raised in the preliminary discussion, including potential suppliers of items.
  • Visit Residential Efficiency Scorecard find out more.
This would cost $580*. (time on site approximately 3.0 hrs)

If you only want a two page certificate to help you maximise your selling price, we can give you a Home Sale Scorecard assessment for a discounted price of only $300*.

Advanced Passive House EnerPHit Analysis

  • A site visit and discussion identifying your long-term goals and understanding the building's construction and condition.
  • Prepare a full building analysis using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP)
  •  We would then prepare an EnerPHit Retrofit Plan (a report in a format developed by the Passive House Institute) based on your objectives and the specific cost-effective opportunities for your home.
  • Meet to discuss the draft report to ensure it meets your needs.
  • Prepare and present the final report.
This would cost $980*. (time on site approximately 3.0 hrs)
*(Costs are for a standard single-story home of a common construction method within 50 km of the Adelaide GPO- Ts and Cs apply.) Extra for two storey, split-level or cellar accessible from inside the home: $100 ($50 for basic audit).
Extra for a certified EnerPHit assessment: POA

See below for an example of low-cost energy saving opportunities.

As a free bonus worth $100, I am now including an energy bill assessment
in the Enhanced Scorecard or Advanced Passive House audits.

As a free bonus worth $100, I am now including an analysis of suitability for

Testimonial

'A big thank you to Clive from Low Energy Home. The Enhanced Residential Efficiency Scorecard Assessment was very informative and helped us understand the energy efficiency of our home. Clive provided a series of short term and long term recommendations, all very well tailored to our goals. The assessor report included detailed information on how to implement those recommendations, with links to potential vendors. We now feel confident about what to focus our attention on and how to implement it! We highly recommend Low Energy Home's services.' (Lorene and Jason, Adelaide)

Energy saving opportunities when inspecting the Baddams home

Thermal image of ceiling with missing insulation
Image showing energy impact of missing ceiling insulation

Missing insulation

When using a thermal imager as part of an inspection, I discovered an area of ceiling which was much hotter than it should be (the yellow colour- it should have been uniformly purple).
Thermal image of ceiling with insulation replaced
Image showing improved ceiling performance after insulation replaced

Insulation replaced

As I had to go in the ceiling anyway, I found the missing batts and replaced them at no charge to the client.
Note the small yellow areas are because the ceiling temperature hadn't yet returned to normal when the image was taken

Typical energy losses due to ceiling batt tossed aside at ceiling fan

More missing insulation

When installing a ceiling exhaust fan the electrician just tossed the insulation aside, instead of trimming to fit. The bright yellow shows how much energy is flowing through this small area. Note that the fan, although possibly legal when installed, doesn't meet current requirements as  it doesn.t have a self closing flap and discharges directly into the ceiling space.
The simple change of fixing the missing insulation will save the client $37.90 per year, as well as improving comfort.
This is in addition to the savings due to the recommended actions.
Installing a non-return flap on the fan will pay for itself in a year.
